OLD TOWN: THE WALLS OF TREVISO

The streets of the city

The presence of the walls in the historic and charming town of Treviso back to Roman times. According to the story, Treviso City was before a Roman town nestled around the highest part of the center, where now are St. Andrew Square, the Piazza dei Signori and Piazza Duomo.

This walled, almost four kilometers long, was built to defend the city, considered the most important stronghold of Venice, by the ambassadors of Cambray. Near the main bastions (Porta Altinia, ramparts of St. Paul, the ramparts door ...) we can still see embedded in the facing brick, elegant bas-reliefs depicting the winged lion, symbol of the power of Venice, which Treviso was submitted in IVX century.

Among the works required to complete the walls were demolished all the houses and civic and religious buildings that somehow could hinder the view of possible attacks or prevent the movement of military assets within the city.

Thanks to this impressive line of defense, Treviso was no longer subject to attacks. In the second half of the 800 they thought to using the walls as a customs barrier, so that any access to the city, by land or by river, were controlled and taxed by controlling the gates of St. Thomas in the north, St. Quaranta in the west and Altinia in the south linking the city center and the periphery.
