History of the Magners Celtic League

The Celtic League was born in the summer of 2001 when the federation of Irish Rugby Football Union, Scottish Rugby Union and Welsh Rugby Union decided to create a new competition that would include also the teams of the four Irish provinces.

Since 2006, the competition is called Magners League thanks to new agreement with the Irish sponsor for five years.

In 2009 the Board of the Celtic League invited the Italian Rugby Federation for two Italian franchises in order to assess their eligibility to participate in the tournament from the  season 2010-11; the first selection, made in June 2009, saw the chosen in Rome and Viadana, something that caused, at political level, the protests of those parties, in particular the Northern League, which led the Benetton Rugby from Treviso back in race after an initial exclusion from the rose of candidates to participate in the Celtic League.
At the end the Board of Celtic chose as new participants in the competition the Benetton Treviso Rugby and the Aironi Rubgy.
